Yelp Is Now Inside ChatGPT. What Should a Local Service Business Do?

Published October 28, 2026

More people now ask ChatGPT things like "Who is a good house cleaner near me?" In 2026, Yelp started feeding its data into those answers. Here is what was actually announced, what we saw on our own companies, and what a cleaning, HVAC, plumbing, handyman or moving company should do about it.

What did Yelp and OpenAI actually announce?

The deal came out in steps:

  • February 12, 2026. In its Q4 2025 shareholder letter, Yelp said it had signed an agreement with OpenAI. No details yet.
  • July 23, 2026. Axios reported that Yelp is licensing its reviews, ratings, photos and business information to OpenAI. ChatGPT can show this data when people ask for local recommendations. Yelp branding and links appear next to it. Financial terms were not disclosed. The deal is not exclusive, so Yelp can sign similar deals with other AI companies.
  • August 6, 2026. Yelp's Q2 2026 shareholder letter confirmed that Yelp ratings and reviews had begun powering ChatGPT's local answers in relevant categories.
  • August 10, 2026. Yelp added restaurant reservations and waitlists inside ChatGPT, for restaurants that use Yelp Guest Manager in the US and Canada.

So the core is a data deal. ChatGPT reads Yelp. When it uses Yelp content, it shows Yelp's name and a link back to the Yelp page.

Does ChatGPT show only businesses that pay for Yelp Ads?

No. When someone asks ChatGPT for a service, it lists the businesses that fit the request. We are not saying ads buy you a higher place in that list. But we did see one clear difference.

We checked this across the cleaning companies we manage and in our owner community. When ChatGPT lists businesses for a request, a business with a Yelp profile and active Yelp Ads gets a direct link to its Yelp page. The customer taps it, lands on the Yelp profile and can request a quote or book right away.

Why that helps:

  • Trust. The customer sees your business on Yelp, a review site they already know.
  • Fewer steps. One tap from the ChatGPT answer to your Yelp page, where they can contact you.
  • More bookings. Trust plus a shorter path means more people reach out. On our companies, it does bring bookings from ChatGPT.

What Yelp and OpenAI have said in public is about data: Yelp licenses its reviews, ratings, photos and business info, and ChatGPT shows Yelp's name and links next to it. Their statements don't describe this ads link. That part is what we saw ourselves.

Yelp Ads also matter on their own. They bring you more leads on Yelp itself: in search results, on competitor pages and in the Yelp app. That is a separate channel from ChatGPT.

Can a customer request a quote from my business inside ChatGPT?

Yes. In its August 6 letter, Yelp wrote: "Request-a-Quote integration with ChatGPT is coming soon" (Yelp, Q2 2026 shareholder letter).

We checked it on our own companies, and it works. ChatGPT shows a Request a Quote button. It takes the customer to the business's Yelp profile, where they send the quote request.

We can't say yet if the button shows for every business and category. Also unconfirmed: whether a quote request from ChatGPT counts as a paid Yelp lead.

Booking a table right inside ChatGPT works for restaurants. For home services, the path is short too: the customer sees you in ChatGPT, taps through to your Yelp page and asks for a quote there.

At our cleaning companies, customers used to find us mostly on Yelp and Google. Now some of them start in ChatGPT and come to our Yelp page from there.

What does this mean for a local service business?

Your Yelp page is no longer read only by people. AI now reads it too, and turns it into a short answer.

That has two effects:

  1. Gaps hurt more. If your hours, service area or services are missing or old, the AI can repeat the wrong facts or skip you.
  2. Reviews carry over. Your rating and what reviewers say about you can shape how ChatGPT describes your business.

The good news: everything that feeds ChatGPT is something you already control on Yelp.

On our own Yelp pages, we started with the basics: correct hours, service area and a clear list of services. It is boring work, but it is what both people and AI read first.

What should you do now? 7 practical steps

  1. Claim your page and fill in everything. Services, service area, hours, year founded, specialties, licenses. Write the description in plain words a customer would use: "move-out cleaning," "AC repair," "same-day plumber."
  2. Check your categories. Pick the categories that match the jobs you want. A cleaning company that also does carpet cleaning should list both. Wrong categories mean wrong questions lead to you, or right ones don't.
  3. Turn on Request a Quote and messaging. The quote button in ChatGPT leads to Request a Quote on your Yelp page. Make sure yours is on and the questions are set up.
  4. Answer fast. Yelp shows customers how quickly a business replies. A lead that waits an hour often books someone else. If you can't reply in minutes, use an auto-reply tool or a person on shift.
  5. Add real photos. Your team, your van, before-and-after shots. Skip stock photos. Photos are part of the data Yelp licenses.
  6. Earn reviews the right way. Yelp does not allow asking for reviews, and its filter hides many reviews. Do great work and make your Yelp page easy to find. (See our guide on why getting Yelp reviews is hard.)
  7. Reply to reviews, good and bad. Short, calm, specific replies show readers, and possibly AI, that you care and fix problems.

If you run Yelp Ads, keep judging them by cost per lead and cost per booked job. In our experience, active ads also give you a direct Yelp link in ChatGPT answers. Count the jobs that come that way too.

FAQ

Does ChatGPT use my Yelp reviews?

For relevant local searches, yes. Yelp confirmed in August 2026 that its ratings and reviews began powering ChatGPT's local answers. Which businesses show up for which question is decided by OpenAI.

Do I need Yelp Ads to appear in ChatGPT?

No. The deal licenses Yelp's data, not ads. But on our companies, businesses with active Yelp Ads get a direct link to their Yelp page in the answer. That makes it easier for a customer to reach you.

Can customers book my service from ChatGPT?

Restaurants can book tables inside ChatGPT. For service businesses, we have seen a Request a Quote button in ChatGPT. It leads to the Yelp profile, where the customer sends the request.

Is this deal only with ChatGPT?

It is not exclusive. Yelp also supplies data to other services, such as Apple Maps and Yahoo, and can sign more AI deals.
